Previously, I worked in secondary schools for 7 years, and this gave me an invaluable insight into the concerns young people have and the types of issues they struggle with.
I work across the Harrogate area building relationships with young people and being their ‘go to’ person for sharing concerns and worries. Young people also share lots of positive things too such as activities they enjoy in their lives. I feel very lucky to be able to support young people, visit amazing schools and meet brilliant people every day. Sometimes I meet with young people in the community. Over the recent half term break I walked a section of the Ripon Rowel walk with one of my mentees. This was great for opening up and talking things through while enjoying the fresh air.
I really enjoy hearing about young people’s lives and what they love to do. I have a small holding with a variety of different animals including pet sheep, cows and rabbits. I often share updates about animals with my young people and encourage them to spend some time outdoors.
For some young people, just getting through the day is tough. Together, we look at practical ways to improve their wellbeing and by being that young person’s champion, I am able to remind them just how great they are.
I absolutely love my job! It is such a privilege to work with young people in North Yorkshire.
